‘Vanished’: a phenomenon in Spain

Created by Xabi Zabaleta and Marta Grau and starring Gorka Otxoa, Itziar Atienza, Jon Lukas, Ane Rot, and singer Leire Martínez, Desaparecido (aka. Vanished) has become a major hit on both Netflix, where it remained in the Top 10 for nine consecutive weeks, and Primeran, breaking records as the most-viewed title in EITB’s history. This youth thriller follows the disappearance of a teenager after a camping trip in the mountains with friends, leaving only a disturbing video posted on social media just before vanishing. Notably, ‘Desaparecido’ is the first series in Spain to be filmed entirely in two parallel versions, in Spanish and Basque.

‘Olivia’: A Feel-Good Family Drama with a Touch of Magical Realism

Olivia is a dramedy created and produced by David Troncoso (‘The Head, Paradise’, ‘La Ley del mar’, ‘Veneno’) y Flipy (‘Las Bravas’, ‘Noobes’, ‘La Ley del mar’, ‘El Chiringuito de Pepe’). The series is centered on Mario Rey (Pablo Chiapella), the country’s most popular TV weatherman, who after an unexpected twist in his life seeks refuge with his daughter Olivia (María Schwinning) at the olive grove of his estranged father Tomás (Nancho Novo), with whom he has not spoken for 30 years. Set in the world of olive oil, the series combines feel-good storytelling with a touch of magical realism. At its heart, it explores the fleeting nature of the present and the lasting value that only time can reveal. The cast also includes Fernando Tejero, Kira Miró, María Barranco, and Lalachus.

Punto Nemo is a Spanish-Portuguese series coproduced by Ficción Producciones and Ukbar Filmes, with the support of Xunta de Galicia, RTP, the Provincial Council of Pontevedra, and TVG. Since its release on March 28, the series has remained at the top of Prime Video’s rankings in Spain.

Portugal will have its own Mirador de Montepinar, renamed as Terraços do Glamour in the adaptation of ‘La que se avecina’ in this country. The series, whose adaptation rights have been sold by Mediterráneo Mediaset España Group, will be produced by See My Dreams and will soon premiere in this country on TVI and Prime Video streaming platform.

The adaptation, which has yet to have a definitive title, will tell the story of the daily life of a community of neighbors in a condominium on the outskirts of Lisbon. Taking advantage of the difficulties in the Portuguese housing market, the developer promised the new owners features that the condominium did not have, leaving them to deal with defective apartments, intercoms that don’t work, and walls so thin that privacy is an illusion.

Portuguese will be the third international remake of the series, following its adaptations in Italy (Canale 5) and Greece (Skai TV). Created by Alberto and Laura Caballero and Daniel Deorador and produced by Mediaset España in collaboration with Contubernio Films, the original Spanish version is one of the longest-running and most successful series in the history of television in Spain.

The remake of ‘La que se avecina’ in Portugal will feature renowned Portuguese actors such as Diogo Morgado, who played Jesus Christ in the popular History Channel series ‘La Biblia’ and in the film ‘Hijo de Dios’; Alexandra Lencastre, Tiago Teotónio Pereira, Bárbara França, Miguel Raposo, Miguel Guilherme, Fernando Pires, Diogo Valsassina, and Margarida Bakker. Shooting to begin in the next few weeks.

Inspired by the multiple murders of “Los Galindos,” which occurred in 1975 on the estate of the same name in Paradas (Seville).

Although the story and characters are fictional, the series recreates the period and social context in which the crime took place, Spain in the last days of Franco regime, also showing the radical cultural, political, and social change Spain took in a very short time. The plot flows along two timelines: 1977, when the journalist Onofre Romera returns to his town to investigate the crime, and 1975, in the weeks leading up to the murders.

Onofre discovers a traumatized and divided town, with families facing each other and an atmosphere of suspicion. As he progresses in his investigation, he runs into the Marquis, Don Rafael Pertierra de Medina, an ambitious and unscrupulous man who hides dark secrets. The series explores the Marquess’ economic intrigues, which lead him to commit increasingly reprehensible acts. The outcome will reveal the truth about the crime and checkmate the power of the time, portraying the duel between those Spains: the one that fights for the future and the one that does not want to let go of the reins, trying to stay in the past.

Produced in collaboration with Unicorn Content created by Begoña Álvarez and Ignacio del Moral, ‘The Marquess’ has a cast of first-rate actors, such as:

Rafael Pertierra de Medina (Víctor Clavijo): Ambitious and unscrupulous Marquess who hides dark secrets. Married for convenience to Concha Perezagua.

Onofre Romera (José Pastor): Journalist who returns to his town to investigate the crime of Los Galindos. He faces a traumatized and divided town.

Alejandro Perezagua (Juan Fernández): Tenacious head of the family who suspects the Marquess’ activities on the Los Galindos estate.

Concha Perezagua (Lara Grube): Marquessi wife who lives in an unhappy marriage. She is unaware of her husband’s infidelities.

Francisco Picazo (Paco Tous): Foreman of Los Galindos, loyal to the Perezagua family. He investigates the Marquess’ irregularities.

Rosita (Laura Baena Torres): Picazo’s wife, a kind woman who fears the consequences of her husband’s actions.

Chelo (Cinta Ramírez): Onofre’s childhood friend, traumatized by the crime and family feuds.

Don Alberto Carabias (Óscar de la Fuente): Accountant of the Perezagua family who keeps an important secret.

Don Joaquín (Joaquín Núñez): Director of the Caja Rural de Paradas, collaborator of the Marquess in his shady business.

“Unauthorized Living” will be adapted in Turkey as “Yetkisiz” (working title), the remake rights were sold by Mediterráneo to the production company ACUNMEDYA for broadcasting on TV8, a Turkish channel that offers internationally successful formats and TV Dramas such as “Survivor”, “The Voice” or “MasterChef” and “The Red Room”, “Tuzak” and “My Home My Destiny” among others. Mediterráneo will be in charge of distributing the Turkish adaptation of the series outside the territory.

The renowned scriptwriter Gokhan Horzum (“Cukur – The Pit” and “Baba – Our Father”) and director Volkan Kocaturk (“Dilek Tasi – A Father’s Promise ” and “Mahkum – Hidden Truth”) will lead the adaptation of “Yetkisiz”, and executive producer Esat Yontunç will oversee the entire adaptation process.

ACUNMEDYA is an independent media and entertainment company dedicated to creating and producing original formats, dramas, and adapting internationally acclaimed shows for broadcasters worldwide.

“Unauthorized Living” around the world

“Yetkisiz” marks the second adaptation of “Unauthorized Living” following the Italian version on Canale 5 in 2022, under the name “Il Patriarca”. Produced by CamFilm, this adaptation was directed and starred by Claudio Amendola, well known in this country for leading performances such as the one he gave for six seasons in “I Cesaroni”, the Italian version of “Los Serrano”.

In addition, the Spanish version of “Unauthorized Living”, starring Jose Coronado, Álex González and Luis Zahera, has achieved considerable international success. Even in the first half of 2023, Unauthorized Living remained one of the most-watched Spanish series on Netflix.

Furthermore, rights have been sold to the MBC Group for broadcasting in the Middle East and North African countries, TNU channel in Uruguay, Dori TLV channels in Israel, Media Vizhion in Albania, and Dexin Films for broadcasting in some Balkan territories in Eastern Europe.

As the series continues to captivate audiences across the globe, the collaboration with Turkish talents and the expertise of ACUNMEDYA and Mediterraneo ensure that “Yetkisiz” will be a compelling addition to the global television landscape, transcending cultural boundaries and reinforcing the series’ enduring popularity.
